Case Studies of Selected Beneficiaries

Shafiq ur Rehman

Shafiq ur Rehman is a business man, running a small stationary shop, who could not think of expanding his business due to limited resources at his disposal. When Shafiq initially learnt of Akhuwat’s interest free loans he saw this as an opportunity to try and expand his business. Initially, he took a loan of five thousand rupees and invested it in his business. Out of the profits from the business   he was able to return the loan. He gained confidence from his success and borrowed another ten thousand rupees, as a result of which his monthly income increased to four thousand five hundred rupees. Subsequently, Shafiq took a third loan and expanded his business further, increasing his monthly income to six thousand rupees. What is especially appreciable is that Shafiq is physically handicapped, as he lost both his legs to Polio in his childhood. He set an example of courage and motivation for others and did not allow his disability to hamper his endeavors to earn a living, proving that sincere efforts can make even small amounts of resources go a long way.

Muhammad Nawaz runs a salad shop and earned hardly fifteen hundred rupees per month. Nawaz took five thousand rupees from Akhuwat for business expansion and saw a growth in income from less than hundred rupees a day to a hundred and seventy five rupees. After repaying his loan within the given time, he took a loan of ten thousand rupees. At this point he entered a new business that of spices, and his income increased to two hundred and fifty rupees a day. The third time, he took fifteen thousand rupees from Akhuwat and purchased a motorcycle rickshaw that he gave on rent on a daily basis for two hundred rupees. Nawaz was loaned twenty thousand rupees, when he applied for a fourth time, with which he purchased a new motorcycle rickshaw. Nawaz not only expanded his business but also bought land in his native village and renovated his house. As a result of his success in his business ventures, Nawaz was able to buy gold jewelry, worth sixty thousand rupees for his marriage aside from saving forty thousand rupees. Nawaz’s case study shows how he was able to fulfill his remarkable entrepreneurship potential with the Akuwat’s support. He is an excellent example of a business man who has proved that people from low income groups of society have the spirit of doing remarkable things if they are given a helping hand and adequate support.
