Akhuwat Online Portal

Until now Akhuwat’s only source of raising funds is through local philanthropy. Beginning with an amount of ten thousand rupees, Akhuwat has to date given loans totaling more than four hundred and forty million rupees and is growing further. As Akhuwat strives to meet the needs of an even larger number of poor of Pakistan and with plans of expansion to other countries such as Afghanistan, it is essential to determine alternate sources of funds to sustain Akhuwat’s mission.

A number of international donors and philanthropists, expatriate Pakistanis among others, have on different forums and platforms expressed a keen desire to contribute towards good causes provided that they are credible and have achieved success in their respective areas. Currently, a significant number of charitable organizations and NGOs solicit donations from these individuals and/or organizations. In spite of this, there is a reluctance to donate money fearing that it will never be put to proper use. If potential donors are fully convinced that their money will be put to good use in a transparent manner, they will donate generously.

Akhuwat aspires to give an opportunity to these international donors and expatriate Pakistanis, who would like to contribute towards the betterment of humanity and elimination of poverty. The organization proposes to bring these donors and needy entrepreneurs together on an online platform, called Akhuwat-Online, and enable direct loansfrom lenders to borrowers. This setup capitalizes on Akhuwat’s existing network of operations across Pakistan, its brand name, and its outstanding record at recovery and couples it with the generosity of overseas donors and the financial support they would like to offer.

To generate people’s trust, Akhuwat’s brand name together with the concept of lending, rather than donating, will be used. This group of people will have a single online platform via which they can contribute easily and will also be able to choose whom their donations will benefit. The particular features of this setup will be that each lender would be able to track the recovery of his/her loan as well as be guaranteed total recovery of the same, irrespective of payment or default from the borrower.

The idea is to use the name, expertise and infrastructure of Akhuwat and to replicate an online model that will ensure a greater amount of capital in circulation for the microfinance activities that Akhuwat carries out across Pakistan.

With Akhuwat-Online, Akhuwat continues to operate as an NGO working for alleviating poverty throughout the country based on humanitarian principles, and yet creates a large enough capital base that is self-sustaining in the long run.
